Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about using the app.

Getting Started
No separate account needed. The app uses Sign in with Apple — your iCloud account is your app account. Just tap "Sign in with Apple" when you first open the app and you're ready to go.
The app is free to download on the App Store. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no ads. All features are included from day one.
Go to the Home tab and tap "+" to add your first account. Choose the account type (bank account, credit card, wallet, or cash), give it a name like "HDFC Savings", and enter your current balance. The app does not connect to your bank — all entries are manual. You can also import past transactions via CSV from the Settings tab.
Yes. Since your data is stored in your private iCloud container, it automatically syncs across all your Apple devices where you're signed in with the same Apple ID. Changes on your iPhone appear on your iPad and vice versa.
Transactions & Accounts
No. Complete Personal Finance is a manual-entry app by design. You enter your transactions yourself. This means your bank credentials are never needed and your financial data never leaves your device. For bulk history, you can import CSV bank statements from HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis, and Kotak via Settings → Import CSV.
Add your credit card as an account (type: Credit Card) and link it to a Debt entry in the Debt tracker. Once linked, every expense logged on that credit card automatically increases your outstanding balance, and every payment you record reduces it. You can see your credit utilisation and minimum payment due at a glance.
Go to Settings → Import CSV. Download your bank statement as a CSV file (most Indian banks offer this in net banking under "Account Statement"). The app auto-detects column formats for HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis, and Kotak. For other banks, you can map columns manually. Duplicate transactions are flagged before import so you can review them.
Every time you save a transaction, the app automatically: updates your account balance, checks if it crosses any budget thresholds (and sends a notification if so), updates linked debt outstanding for EMI payments or credit card spending, and recalculates goal progress. You don't need to manage these manually — it all happens in the background when you hit Save.
Budgets, Goals & Insights
When you set a budget for a category (like Food), The app monitors your spending in that category for the month. When you reach 80% of the limit, you'll get a local notification. When you reach 100%, you'll get an "exceeded" alert. Alerts are local notifications — no internet connection is required and no data leaves your device.
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. Assets include all bank account balances, cash, wallets, and investment current values. Liabilities include all outstanding loan amounts and credit card balances. The calculation updates automatically whenever you add or edit a transaction.
Smart Insights analyses your transaction history locally on your device and surfaces patterns like subscription cost creep, spending anomalies vs your monthly average, savings rate trends, and debt progress. All analysis happens on-device — nothing is sent to a server. Insights refresh weekly and after significant transactions.
Data & Privacy
Your data is stored on your device via SwiftData and synced to your private iCloud container. Only you — via your Apple ID — can access it. The developers have no access to your financial data, ever. This is not a policy choice — it's a technical reality of how CloudKit private databases work.
Go to Settings → Data. You can export all transactions as a CSV file (filterable by date range, account, and category), or export a full JSON backup of all your data (accounts, transactions, budgets, goals, debts, investments). You can restore from a JSON backup on any device. We recommend backing up periodically.
Go to Settings → Data → Clear All Data. This permanently deletes all your data from the app and from your iCloud container. This action requires double confirmation and cannot be undone. If you uninstall the app without clearing data first, your data remains in iCloud and will be restored if you reinstall.
Notifications are used for: (1) budget alerts when you approach or exceed your monthly limits, (2) bill reminders before recurring payments are due, (3) a daily digest reminding you to categorise any uncategorised transactions. All notifications are local — generated on your device, not pushed from a server. You can configure or disable all notifications in Settings → Notifications.
Tax Helpers
No. The tax helper feature is a tracking and organisational tool only — it helps you tag transactions with relevant sections (80C, 80D, HRA, 80G, etc.) and generate a summary report for the financial year. It does not calculate your tax liability or provide tax advice. Always verify your figures with a qualified Chartered Accountant before filing your returns.
The tax summary covers the Indian financial year (April 1 to March 31). You can select which financial year to generate the summary for. The report can be exported as a PDF to share with your CA.
